The Time Eddie Van Halen Nearly Hung Up On Quincy Jones

Legendary producer Quincy Jones has died at the age of 91, so it’s a good time to remember his awkward encounter with another legendary artist – Eddie Van Halen.

Jones is the man who recruited Eddie to play on Michael Jackson’s “Beat It”. But when Eddie got the call, he thought he was being pranked.

Telling the story to CNN in 2012, Van Halen said he shouted “What the hell do you want!” He quickly apologized once he realized he was actually talking to Quincy Jones.

Eddie says he still wasn’t convinced until he went to the studio the next day and met with Quincy and MJ in person.

Ironically, Michael Jackson’s Thriller would end up keeping Van Halen’s 1984 from reaching #1 on the charts.
